Farmside Lateral Flow Test
Who would benefit from using this test?
Veterinarians and dairy farmers.
Why should farmers and vets use this test?
It removes the guesswork from determining the cause of an infection, and therefore, the best course of action. Is the affected animal Staph-aureus positive, most likely contagious, and spreading the pathogen to its herdmates? Or is it a Strep uberis infection that requires a less aggressive means of treating and managing? Getting this decision right first time can save farmers thousands in lost milk, antibiotics, and veterinary care.
How does it work?
A sample of milk from a visibly infected quarter is placed in the sample well. The sample passes through the test membrane, and in less than 10 minutes, generates separate visual signals in the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus uberis-specific antibodies. Aseptic sampling is not necessary.
Where can I buy it?
The test is not commercially available yet, and is being optimised and scaled up by lateral flow specialists. Watch this space!
